How to avoid Procrastination?

What is Procrastination?

Latin: procrastinarepro-, ‘forward’, with -crastinus, ’till next day’ from “cras“, ‘tomorrow’.
It is the action of delaying or Postponing something. In sensible word it is the avoidance of doing something that needs to be accomplished by a definite deadline.Researchers stated it as a habitual or intentional delay of starting or finishing something,95 percent of us procrastinate to some degree. It may be academic or non-academic or behavioral.
e.g -It is a common practice of most of the student to submit their assignments on the last date; Rescheduling the exam preparation(From today to tomorrow); etc
Fact: It is also common in animals. There are experiments finding clear evidence for “procrastination” among pigeons, which show that pigeons tend to choose a complex but delayed task rather than an easy but hurry-up one.

The reason behind  procrastination ?

In case of starting something new, the reason behind procrastination is quite common & referred as a negative trait due to its hindering effect on one’s productivity. It may be-

  • Depression: It makes us lethargy to do something.
  • Lac of confidence,Feeling helpless,Inadequacy etc. are  big reasons of being Procrastinated.
  • Impostor syndrome is common to more than 90% poeple.(Read more)

In case of delaying something already started, the reason may be-

  • Bad habit: Habit of scrolling facebook, twitter,Instagram, youtube are making you delay in your active work.
  • Lac of Time management.
  • Fear of next steps:Many of you started something that was not completed because the next step is fearful.
  • Lac of knowledge, lac of interest or may be Impostor syndrome.

Can we beat it?

As we know it is a behavioral or habitual or intentional issue, If you go through the reasons you will understand that everyone can beat it.But it is not so much easy.
An approach that integrates different core theories of motivation as well as meta-analytic research on Procrastination is the Temporal Motivation Theory. It summarizes key predictors of procrastination (expectancy, value, and impulsiveness) into a mathematical equation.

where, the desire for a particular outcome,
Expectancy or self-efficacy is the probability of success,
Value is the reward associated with the outcome,
Impulsiveness is the individual’s sensitivity to delay and
Delay is the time to realization.
The theory emphasizes time as a critical, motivational factor. This theory helps to understand the impact of time, and deadlines. It will motivate you to perceive that the deadline is near.We all know that as the exam comes closure, our study motivation get booster.Like that we can assign our deadlines.
